PHIL HELLMUTH

”I do have unparalleled results in Hold’em over the last 18 years”
Phil Hellmuth, May 3, 2006

Having won nine gold bracelets between 1989 and 2003, Phil Hellmuth indeed has a strong record. And somehow he rarely forgets to mention that. Other famous quotes are: “I’ve revolutionized the way to play Texas Hold’em” and “If luck weren't involved I guess I'd win every one.”

His focus in poker is Hold’em – all his bracelets are won in Hold’em competitions. Five of these were in No Limit, three in Limit and one in Pot Limit.

Hellmuth started playing poker in 1985 while studying at the University of Wisconsin. He soon found himself amassing quite a lot of money and dropped out of college, paid his student loans, and started playing professionally. Being the oldest of five siblings – and having a dad with both Ph.D and M.B.A. who also worked at the University of Wisconsin – his decision was not all that popular within the family. Things turned around, however, when in 1989 he ended up as the youngest ever World Champion at the age of 24.

Hellmuth is also famous for his televised promise to shave his head if amateur Robert Varkonyi won the World Championships in 2002. Unfortunately for Hellmuth, Varkonyi ended up as the winner. But to his credit, Hellmuth did follow through on his promise as shown on ESPN.

Considering that he is only 41 years old – and looking at his record this far – one has to acknowledge that he might be able to fulfil his life ambition and be seen as the best poker player of all time.
